VPN ServicesA Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a tunnel between your computer and a remote host. VPNs are commonly used to provide a secure connection between a remote site or "Road Warrior" and a central corporate network. However, they can also be used to provide a secure tunnel to the public Internet - your traffic is securely sent through the VPN tunnel to a remote host, where it is unpacked and set to its destination. The traffic appears to be orginating from the remote host, so your original IP address is not visible.
Common reasons for using a VPN are:
- Providing a secure channel from an unsecured WiFi hotspot
- Accessing sites that have been blocked by a firewall or censor
- Online gaming
- Anonymity and protection from ISPs and eavesdroppers
There are several flavors of VPN. The simplest for Windows and Mac users is PPTP, which is supported directly by native clients.
